Five Steps to a Great Presentation

Did you know that people fear giving presentations more than they fear death?

If you are one of those people, then here are some steps to take to quell that fear.


Manage Your Nerves

When I first trained to be a trainer at Rolls-Royce plc my Manager told me that the day he had people working for him that were not nervous when presenting was the day he didn’t want them working for him. He believed that being nervous meant that we cared, and our adrenaline pumping through our veins made us good at presenting.

Here are some ways to manage your nerves

  • Dress appropriately – look the part
  • Arrive early
  • Interact before you start
  • Use your breathing to help
  • Prepare, prepare, prepare!!
  • Remember nerves are healthy
  • Calm yourself from the inside

    Have a look at this picture. What do you see? Now show it to your colleague. What do they see? Do you both see different things?


    Imagine influencing in this instance if you wanted to paint the pillars and your colleague can only see people? How difficult would it be to get them to agree to paint pillars they cannot see?

    This can often be what is happening when you are struggling to influence people at work and at home to do what you think is important? They just see different things or things differently, so we need to help them see what we see so that we can move forward together.
